Style of Wado Ryu
What is Wado ryu?
Wado ryu is first of all a karate style which was created out of a jiu jitsu style called Yoshin Shindo ryu and techniques from Shuri-te karate, with principles from a Kendo style Yagyu Shinkage ryu.
Shuri is one of the main cities on Okinawa, where karate originate from. All karate styles that came from the area of Shuri are called Shuri-te. The styles that came for instance out of the Naha region are called Naha-te.
Together with the fact that Wado ryu developed entirely on the mainland of Japan, this main principles make Wado ryu in its core a Japanese martial art.
The World Karate Federation consist of four main
Karate styles; Wado ryu, Shoto kan, Goju ryu, Shito ryu.
Of these four Wado is the biggest style group in Japan and probably also in the
world.
Wado is known to be very economical with its movements and techniques. It is often said that with Wado you get the maximum result through minimum (physical) effort.
The final goal in Wado (technically) is to be able to
deal with attacks with a sword (katana=traditional Japanese sword).
The stages before this are to deal with attacks with no weapon,( hands) then
later against knife (tanto in Japanese).
Because of the basics of Wado (Karate, Jiu-jitsu and Ken jitsu) there are may techniques to be learned by the students of Wado ryu, which will enrich and broaden there knowledge on how to use their body in situations that call for self-defense and other situations that will bring stress to a person.
Different techniques in Wado ryu;
punches and kicks originate from karate
throws, joint-locks etc. from jiu-jitsu
moving the body in the right way at the right time originate from ken jitsu.
This all together makes a complete style for preparing a person to fight against styles that are used to close range fighting (like Judo) and styles that use long range fighting (like karate, boxing etc.)
